Geology and Earth Related Sciences for All

The Open University Geological Society - the largest OU Society

OUGS supports the study of geology and other earth sciences by providing opportunities for members to learn via field trips, talks, workshops and conferences led by experts in their fields.

South West Branch's Hartland Geoweekend

Membership is open to everyone interested in geology and other earth sciences, not just Open University students and staff. Our 2300+ members include amateur fossil hunters, professional oil engineers, oceanographers and satellite imagery experts studying planetary geology.

The OUGS operates from 17 Branches throughout the UK and Europe. Branches are managed locally to provide a focus for members in a given area.

Our field trips span the globe. We offer something for everyone. During 2011 our field trips will visit France, Spain, Portugal, Tenerife, Cyprus, Norway, Iceland, Sikkim, China, USA and over 100 sites in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

The OUGS Newsletter is published six times a year.

The OUGS Journal is produced twice annually to publish:
- Research Papers from members;
- Annual symposium lectures.

OUSA Conference 2012: 22-24 June 2012, Milton Keynes

OUGS still remains affiliated to OUSA: we would therefore request that members of OUGS who are current OU students contact the OUGS Secretary to attend OUSA Conference 2012 as delegates on behalf of OUGS (we can send up to five delegates).

Please see the May 2012 Newsletter for more details.

OUGS Library

It was decided at the last OUGS Committee meeting, and subsequently advised to those attending the AGM, that the OUGS Library would be disbanded.

Books are being offered to their reviewers first and the remainder will be offered to the membership either by post (you will need to pay the postage) or at Symposium.

From now on, any books which the Society receives for review will not need to be returned by the reviewer. As is usual practice, the reviewer may keep the book or pass it on (at no personal gain to themselves - i.e. no selling on eBay!) to say their Branch library if they do not wish to retain it.

Reviews will still appear in the Journal.

 Vacancies:

For details of any OUGS Committee position please check the Job Descriptions in the Members Only section.
