Welcome to Geology in Yorkshire with YOUGS

Here in Yorkshire we probably have the widest range of geological periods in the country. In the western dales are the Ordovician and Silurian inliers surrounded by Carboniferous limestone which grades northwards into the Yoredale Series and southwards into the shales and sandstones of Millstone Grit country. Heading eastwards we pass through coal measures, Permian reef limestones with stromatolites, Triassic and Jurassic strata of the North York Moors before reaching the fossiliferous Jurassic coast and the Cretaceous chalk of Flambrough.

Add to this eastward sloping layer cake a sprinkling of glacial till, erratics, drumlins and other glacial features, the occasional volcanic dyke, and you will have an understanding of the long geological history of this county.

Come with us on field trips to enhance your knowledge of this history whilst taking in some of the best scenery in the country.
