| January 24, 2008 | Your Planet Earth - An Outreach Initiative 2008 is the UN Year of Planet Earth, and one key theme is education. The Geologists’ Association and the Geological Society have just launched an initiative that we hope will contribute to getting the message across. Across the country, hundreds of people go out to schools to talk about dinosaurs, volcanoes, mineral resources, climate change, and many other topics in the earth sciences. And kids love these talks – maybe because of the novelty of the subject matter, or perhaps because they are bored with their regular teachers! | |

Also, for a trial period of 2 years, awards of up to £1000 can be made to groups of members undertaking geological projects. | |

| August 02, 2006 | Geoff Brown Memorial Fund Geoff Brown, fomer head of Earth Sciences at the OU, and President of OUGS from 1983 to 1984 was one of Britain's most distinguished scientists. He was killed in a volcanic eruption 1993 while working in the crater of Galeras volcano in southern Colombia. To honour Geoff's memory the OUGS has set up a fund to buy equipment that can be used by local people to monitor the activity of hazardous volcanoes in their area. | |
