August 02, 2010   New books for review
The OUGS are donated books for the library provided that we review them, and publish that review. There are always books that need reviewing, so the Archivist would like to hear from you. Open the page for current titles, and contact.

It is OUGS policy to offer books from the review library to members when they are no longer popular for borrowers. We can now offer (for the price of postage, or collect from Symposium) 9 books to members. Contact the archivist if you would like one.

April 09, 2010   Obituary Mike Henty
It is with great sadness that we have to report that Mike died on 13th March 2010 after suffering from cancer since the autumn of 2006. His treatment was initially successful, but in 2009 a tumor returned and defied treatment. OUGS will be much poorer for his loss, as he contributed so much and was friends with so many.

Discover if you live on rocks from an extinct volcano, in the middle of an ancient river or deep under a Caribbean-like sea teeming with exotic creatures. This is now possible with the British Geological Survey’s release of OpenGeoscience.
November 28, 2009   Annette Kimmich 1946 – 2009
It is with great regret that we have to report that Annette passed away peacefully on 20 November 2009 after a long illness. As some of you may know she had been battling with cancer for some time but eventually, sadly, the metastases caused multiple organ failure.
November 21, 2009   Sale of S260 petrological microscopes and thin sections.
The Earth & Environmental Sciences Department has a number of petrological microscopes and boxes of S260 thin sections available following the end of S260.
November 21, 2009   IAN GASS BURSARY - Applications are now invited for 2010
This award (up to £750) is made annually. It's open to anyone who has studied with the Open University and who wishes to pursue independent geological work but who doesn't already hold a grant. You don't have to be studying for a PhD or MSc but may be pursuing a private passion.

November 12, 2008   Your Planet Earth - An Outreach Initiative - Free Downloadable Presentations
2008 is the UN Year of Planet Earth, and one key theme is education. The Geologists’ Association and the Geological Society have just launched an initiative to provide FREE Powerpoint Presentations to contribute to getting the message across. Every year hundreds of people go out to schools to talk about earth sciences. These presentations are designed to help anyone teaching these subjects. They cover: dinosaurs, volcanoes, mineral resources, climate change, oil and gas, Geological time, Ice ages, The history of life, and Evolution.
January 20, 2008   AGM moves to April - Reasons
Regulations in the new Charities Act require accounts to be presented much earlier in the year, and although we are not a charity at present, may have to become one. We are very sorry to have to report the death of Tony Browne on 20th July 2007.
August 30, 2007   OUGS Prizes & Awards
Three prizes are awarded each year to the best student in the following Earth Science Courses: S260 - Geology; S339 - Understanding the Continents; and S279 Our Dynamic Planet: Earth and Life (will replace S269 Earth and Life). Also, for a trial period of 2 years, awards of up to £1000 can be made to groups of members undertaking geological projects.

Tim Brewer was a local OU East Midlands tutor, and also Residential School tutor for S238 in Nottingham.

The implications of the PPS9 Planning regulations for Geo-Conservation, as it affects LGAPs (Local Geodiversity Action Plans) plus associated RIGS (Regionally Important Geological Sites) and SSSIs (Sites of Special Scientific Interest).

Open to the public, this extensive library of geological maps and books, both modern and historical is an invaluable resource for students and researchers. See article for links.
August 02, 2006   Geoff Brown Memorial Fund
Geoff Brown, fomer head of Earth Sciences at the OU, and President of OUGS from 1983 to 1984 was one of Britain's most distinguished scientists. He was killed in a volcanic eruption 1993 while working in the crater of Galeras volcano in southern Colombia. To honour Geoff's memory the OUGS has set up a fund to buy equipment that can be used by local people to monitor the activity of hazardous volcanoes in their area.
